Breaking the Stigma of Divorce in Your 20s or 30s

Posted on: 21 October 2022 by Goodwins Family Law Solicitors

The release of Adele’s fourth studio album ‘30’ has thrust the topic of young divorce into the mainstream. The megastar was just 30 when she got divorced from her ex-husband, and her latest album is flooded with lyrics about the embarrassment and shame she experienced for getting divorced so young.

However, Adele isn’t alone, and many of her listeners will resonate with the themes and lyrics found throughout the album.

In the UK, an estimated 42% of marriages are expected to end in divorce. The average age for divorce in the UK  is 46.4 for men and 43.9 for women, but there are a significant number of men and women who get divorced much younger. In fact, official statistics showed that over 20,000 people under the age of 35 got divorced in 2019. For these men and women, the social stigma of young divorce can add an extra layer of trauma to an already traumatic event.

Why is there a stigma around getting divorced young?

It is common for men and women who get divorced at a young age to feel as if they ‘failed’ at their marriage. For most of these men and women, it will have been their first marriage, and they may feel that society is judging them for not succeeding.

Young women in particular feel ostracised from their friendship groups when going through a divorce. Many get married at a time when the rest of the friendship group is single, and so coming out of the marriage can be an isolating experience. This is especially true if they get divorced at a time when most people are just starting their own marriages. Many feel as though they are ‘too young to be divorced but too old to be single’.

Often, a couple will share the same friendship group, and a divorce would mean that one person may have to split from their friends.

Plus, young people feel particularly daunted when it comes to the divorce process. Many of them worry that they aren’t getting their fair share of the assets and aren’t always sure about their best options. They may feel the need to rely on parents or other friends/relatives that have previously been through a divorce to guide them through the process.
