Since December 2006, same sex partners have been legally allowed to register their relationship as a civil partnership. This law change meant that same sex couples in these partnerships were afforded the same legal rights as those in a same sex marriage, including child adoption and financial settlements during the dissolution of the partnership.

A civil partnership can be dissolved on the grounds that the relationship has irretrievably broken down, and this is demonstrated by instances of unreasonable behaviour, desertion or living apart for a prolonged period.
